Coconut Probiotic Drink

buko.PNG

Coconut water is the clear or slightly cloudy liquid that you find when you crack open a green coconut. It’s different from coconut milk, which is prepared with grated coconut meat from a mature, brown coconut.

Coconut water contains potassium, carbs, protein, minerals, and vitamins. It’s low in cholesterol and fat. Unlike water, coconut water contains electrolytes, minerals that are crucial to the function of your body’s cells. It’s important to replace electrolytes when you lose them through sweating, vomiting, or diarrhea.

Pure coconut water has been used as an intravenous fluid to hydrate critically ill patients in remote areas where medical resources are limited. For example, the case of a stroke patient in the Solomon Islands who was successfully hydrated with coconut water appears in American Journal of Emergency Medicine.

Why Drink Coconut Water?

Coconut water contains essential minerals that serve as electrolytes in the body, including:

  • Potassium

  • Sodium

  • Chlorides

  • Calcium

  • Magnesium

Researchers at the Loma Linda University Medical Center report that raw coconut water is sterile. It can be safely injected directly into the bloodstream without harming blood cells. The mineral profile of coconut water is so similar to human plasma that in emergency situations doctors have injected it intravenously to prevent dehydration.

This was a common practice in World War II and during the Vietnam War when intravenous solution was in short supply. A patient can safely receive as much as one quarter to one third of the patient’s body weight in coconut water intravenously.

The high levels of potassium in coconut water make it an effective remedy for kidney stones, calcium crystal stones that form in the kidney and travel through the urinary system.

Coconut water is also heart healthy. Research shows that coconut water may protect against heart attack, high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, and blood clots.

Here are some benefits you may not know about. Coconut water:

  • Is high in potassium.
Potassium is critical for the proper functioning of your body’s brain and nervous system and for maintaining muscle strength. One cup of coconut water contains 600 mg of potassium similar to one cup of mashed banana at 806 mg.

  • A great source of magnesium.
Low magnesium levels can lead to low energy levels along with many other issues. Coconut water is one more way to increase your body’s magnesium levels.

  • Contains living enzymes.
The enzymes in raw coconut water aid in the digestion and metabolism of food.

  • Contains cytokines.
Cytokines have anti-aging and anti-carcinogenic effects on humans and supposedly slow down the normal sequence of aging.

  • Is rich in antioxidants.
Antioxidants absorb free radicals and toxins in our body.

  • Is an excellent alternative to sports drinks.
Coconut water is a great source of electrolytes (sodium, potassium, chloride) for amazing hydration after exercise, and especially during hot weather. In addition, it can help you quit heavily-processed, sugar-rich sports drinks, especially when sugar levels are reduced due to the fermentation process.

  • Alkalizes your system.
Drinking coconut water, with a PH level of 9.5, helps neutralize acidity in the body.

  • Is high in fiber, compared to other water and sodas.
Once cup of coconut water contains 3 grams of fiber to help maintain blood sugar levels. This in turns prevents food cravings, sugar spikes and sugar crashes.

  • Has been used as a blood plasma substitute.
Coconut water was used in World War II for emergency transfusions when blood plasma was low. Though this sounds great, it may be a myth. But coconut water has served as an emergency short-term intravenous hydration fluid.

  • Supports your immune system.
Coconut water contains lauric acid that is antibacterial, antifungal and anti-viral to boost your immune system and fight infections. The fermentation process introduces additional immune-enhancing bacteria.

  • Aids in digestion.
Not only does the fiber content of coconut water help your digestive system, but probiotics created during the fermentation process help restore a healthy balance of bacteria in your gut.

  • Helps alleviate hangover symptoms.
Drinking alcohol depletes our potassium and dehydrates us. The high levels of potassium in coconut water, along with it hydrating properties, helps both of these symptoms.
